Tempest

(2018) for cello ensemble

Tempest depicts an epic adventure through a storm, designed to allow cellists of different skill levels to explore the sonic capabilities of their instruments. It is comprised of individual layers of musical patterns that build into a single massive force, much like the relentless rain, wind, and hail of a tempest. Throughout the piece, the storm barrels against our hero, represented by the sweeping main theme, with the eye of the storm offering the only moments of brief tranquility and reflection. Before long the storm returns with a vengeance, building from the pitter patter of the pizzicato to the booming thunder of the percussive techniques.

Commissioned and premiered by the Brainerd High School Orchestra Cellos, Brainerd, MN, May 15, 2018.
